Macro mineral requirements by grazing zebu bovines R. Bras. Zootec.
Moraes,Eduardo Henrique Bevitori Kling de; Paulino,Mário Fonseca; Moraes,Kamila Andreatta Kling de; Valadares Filho,Sebastião de Campos; Lazzarini,Isis; Monnerat,João Paulo Ismério dos Santos; Couto,Victor Rezende Moreira; Souza,Marcos Gonçalves de.
The objective of this study was to determine requirements of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K) and sodium (Na) for grazing zebu bovines. The experiment area was composed of Brachiaria decumbens paddocks. Twenty-seven non-castrated animals, with initial live weight of 311.0 kg and at an average age of 14 months were used. Three animals were slaughtered, after adaptation period, so they were used as control for estimates of empty body weight and initial body composition of animals in the experiment. Out of the 24 remaining animals, four were sent to the maintenance group with restrict grazing time to limit energy intake close to the maintenance level. The other 20 animals were distributed in four treatments: mineral mixture,...

Net requirements of energy, protein and macrominerals for weight gain of grazing beef cattle castrated at different ages, with and without supplementation R. Bras. Zootec.
Rocha,Anilza Andréia da; Paulino,Mário Fonseca; Fernandes,Henrique Jorge; Barros,Lívia Vieira de; Lopes,Sidnei Antonio; Galon,Leandro; Silva,Aline Gomes da; Almeida,Daniel Mageste de.
The objective of this experiment was to estimate the requirements of energy, protein and macrominerals of grazing crossbreds calves, in Brachiaria decumbens Stapf pasture, castrated at different ages, with and without supplementation. Forty-seven young calves at initial age of 120±30.1 days and 115.3±1.97 kg of live weight were used. To estimate net energy requirements for weight gain, a regression equation between energy retained in the gain and empty body weight gain and metabolic empty body weight was obtained. For estimation of net protein requirements for weight gain, a regression equation was adjusted between protein retained in gain and empty body weight gain and energy content of this gain. Net requirements of Ca, P, Mg and Na for weight gain were...

Performance and carcass traits of Nellore and Red Norte steers finished in feedlot R. Bras. Zootec.
Machado Neto,Otávio Rodrigues; Ladeira,Márcio Machado; Gonçalves,Tarcisio de Moraes; Lopes,Leandro Sâmia; Oliveira,Dalton Mendes de; Lima,Renato Ribeiro de.
The objective of this work was to evaluate average daily gain (ADG) and carcass traits in Nellore and Red Norte steers, finished in feedlots and to evaluate performance predictions by using the systems BR-CORTE, CNCPS 5.0 and NRC (2000). It was used 41 steers: 19 Nelore animals with initial body weight of 361 ± 31 kg and 22 Red Norte animals with initial body weight of 367 ± 30 kg. Adaptation period lasted 28 days. Animal performance evaluation was composed of three 28 day period, totaling 84 days. At the end of each period, animals were weighed after a 16-hour feeding fast. Average gain weight of Red Norte steers was greater than Nellore breed animals (1.43 vs. 1.81 kg/day, respectively). Red Norte animals also presented greater loin eye area (75.41 cm²...

Reaction norms models in the adjusted weight at 550 days of age for Polled Nellore cattle in Northeast Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
Ambrosini,Diego Pagung; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Braccini Neto,José; Martins Filho,Raimundo; Amaral,Rosimira dos Santos; Cardoso,Fernando Flores; Malhado,Carlos Henrique Mendes.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the genotype-environment interaction (GEI) in the body weight adjusted to 550 days of age (W550) of Polled Nellore cattle raised in Northeastern Brazil using reaction norms (RN) models. Hierarchical RN models included fixed effects for age of cow (linear and quadratic) and random effects for contemporary groups (CG) and additive genetic RN level and slope. Four RN hierarchical models (RNHM) were used. The RNHM2S uses the solutions of contemporary groups estimated by the standard animal model (AM) and considers them as environmental level for predicting the reaction norms and the RNHM1S, which jointly estimate these two sets of unknowns. Two versions were considered for both models, one with a homogeneous (Hm) and...

Selection for higher body weight in Nelore cattle is effective in achieving an increase of longissimus muscle area without reducing subcutaneous fat thickness R. Bras. Zootec.
Pinheiro,Tiago Roque; Mercadante,Maria Eugênia Zerlotti; Albuquerque,Lucia Galvão de; Bonilha,Sarah Figueiredo Martins; Monteiro,Fábio Morato.
The objectives of this study were to estimate heritabilities and genetic and phenotypic correlations between carcass traits measured by ultrasound and other economically important traits generally used as selection criteria in beef cattle and to estimate the genetic changes in the carcass traits as a result of selection for post-yearling weight. Carcass traits measured by ultrasound at two ages (12 and 18 months) and the correlation of these traits with weight, hip height and body condition score of males (yearling) and females (post-yearling) were analyzed. Multi-trait analysis was performed using the restricted maximum likelihood method under an animal model. To demonstrate the effect of selection for growth, phenotypic and expected breeding value means...
